1. Categories and Requirements for the visa application


Visa application categories to be accepted

※For travelers who are staying at the departure area of the airport in Japan until their next flight, no visa is required regardless of nationality. If you are unsure with your flight, please contact airline company in advance.

※If you are a foreign national residing in Nigeria (Third country visa application), valid CERPAC card or valid residence permit will be required at the time of visa application.

※If a visa applicant is a minor and planning to travel without parents, a letter of consent signed by a parent, applicant's birth certificate, and photocopy of the valid parent's ID (e.g. passport, driver’s license) with signature is required.

2. Procedures for the visa application

  1. When all the required documents are ready, the visa applicant can apply for visa at the Embassy of Japan in Abuja, Nigeria by submitting all the necessary documents. 

  2. Considering the current Novel coronavirus outbreak,  visits to the consular section are by appointment only (→How to book an appointment for visa application)

  3. All visa applications must be submitted in person by the applicant.

  4. Embassy will not accept visa application which is insufficient or incomplete.

  5. Please note that there is no accredited travel agent approved by the Embassy of Japan in Nigeria.

3. Criteria of visa issuance

A Japanese visa will be issued to an applicant when he/she meets all of the following requirements and if the issuance is considered to be appropriate.
 
  1. The applicant possesses a valid passport and is entitled to the re-entry to a country of his/her nationality or a country of his/her residence.
     
  2. All submitted documents are authentic, completed and satisfactory.
     
  3. The activities to be engaged in Japan/ the civil status or the position of the applicant/ the period of stay meet the requirements for the status of residence and the period of stay stipulated in the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act. (Cabinet Order No.319 of 1951. Hereinafter referred to as the "Immigration Control Act")
     
  4. The applicant do not fall under any of the items of Article 5, Paragraph 1 of the Immigration Control Act.

4. Countries or regions for visa exemptions

Japan has taken measures concerning the Visa Exemption Arrangements with 68 countries and regions, but the arrangements have been suspended for the time being, except for some countries and regions.

6. Office hours for visa application and passport collection

Considering the current Novel coronavirus outbreak, visits to the consular section are by appointment only.

7. Application examination period and flight reservationd

Applicants are required to apply for visa at least 2 weeks before departure date.
In other words, the intended date of departure from Nigeria on your flight reservation slip will be required to be at least in 2 weeks from the date of visa application.
Please note that we do not require purchase of flight tickets.

The time to process an application for any kind of visas depends on the applicant’s circumstances and the Embassy does not issue any visas on the same day of application.

8. Validity of visa & Validity of stay

Validity of visa
Concerning a single entry visa, duration between date of issue and date of expiry is 3 months.
It means that the validity of single entry visa is 3 months, and you are required to enter Japan within the duration.
If you wish to postpone your travel (departure) for longer than 3 months, you will be required to make another visa application.

Validity of stay
Your validity of stay will be counted from the following day that you arrive in Japan.
Example: 1st JAN to 16th JAN counted as 15 days (NOT 16 days).

9. Visa fees

Nigerian N10,700 / Indian N2,950
(as of 1st April, 2022)
  • Certain countries are visa fee exemption countries. Please ask consular section for details.
  • If the visa is not issued, no fees are required.
  • Visa fees will be required for pick up time only.
  • We accept only cash. Please have the exact amount ready.  
*Concerning collection by proxy person*
You may send someone on your behalf for the collection of your passport.
Please make sure to provide
(1) a LETTER OF AUTHORIZATION indicating that you have authorized a specific individual to collect your passport, and
(2) have the individual bring in a VALID PHOTO ID. (e.g: passport, driver’s license, etc.) and
(3) your VISA APPLICATION RECEIPT which you were given at the time of visa application.

10. Other important notes

We do not accept your visa application if your previous application was rejected and you will apply for the same purpose of visit within six months from the rejection. Click here for the detail.
