Japan Supports Digital Teacher Professional Development in Nigeria

On 21 July 2026, Ms. MIYAZAWA Akiko, Development Cooperation Attaché, representing the Embassy of Japan in Nigeria, attended the Masters Training Workshop on the Promotion of Teacher Professional Development through Mobile Learning Platforms in Abuja. The workshop brought together representatives of the Federal Ministry of Education, UNESCO International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa (UNESCO IICBA), and education institutions to strengthen digital learning for teachers.
In her goodwill message, Ms. Miyazawa highlighted Japan's contribution of approximately USD 1 million to the UNESCO-IICBA project, implemented in partnership with Castalia Co.,Ltd, a Japanese Ed-tech company, andthe Pan-African Virtual and Electronic University (PAVEU) initiative led by the African Union. She noted that the project reflects Japan's commitment, reaffirmed at TICAD 9, to promoting digital transformation, innovation, and inclusive education across Africa.
The project aims to support teachers and school leaders—with a particular focus on female educators—to access quality professional development through mobile-based learning solutions, ultimately reaching more than 2,000 teachers across Nigeria.
At the workshop, the Government of Japan, through UNESCO IICBA, officially handed over 40 tablets and two laptops to participating institutions and the Federal Ministry of Education to support the rollout of the mobile learning platform.
