Japan’s Support Advances Safe Medical Waste Management in Enugu

On 1 July 2026, our Charge d’Affaires a.i., Mr. KOZAKI Hitoshi, led an Embassy team to Abakpa Primary Healthcare Centre in East Enugu Local Government Area, Enugu State, for an interim monitoring visit to a project funded under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), which aims to provide medical waste incinerator for the facility.
The project is being implemented by the South Saharan Social Development Organization. During the visit, the team confirmed that the project is progressing well as planned, and construction of the incinerator housing underway with completion scheduled for December 2026.
Following the site visit, the Embassy team and the implementing NGO paid a courtesy call on the Secretary to the Enugu State Government, Professor Chidiebere Onyia, who reaffirmed the State Government’s commitment to supporting the successful implementation of the project.
Once completed, the incinerator will serve not only the Abakpa Primary Healthcare Centre but also approximately 20 healthcare centres in the Abakpa area. It will provide a safe and centralized solution for medical waste disposal, significantly reducing the risk of infection and environmental contamination.
Japan is proud to support initiatives that improve public health systems and promote sustainable development across Nigeria.
