【Japan’s Grassroots Assistance Continues to Strengthen Health and Education in Ebonyi】

On 2 July 2026, Deputy Head of Mission, Mr. HITOSHI Kozaki led an Embassy team to the Amachara Health and Education Resource Centre in Afikpo Local Government Area, Ebonyi State, for a follow-up visit to assess the long-term impact of a project supported under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).
Implemented by the International Centre for Energy, Environment and Development (ICEED) Foundation and commissioned in 2020, the project involved the renovation of the health and education resource centre, the installation of a solar power system, and the provision of a vaccine refrigerator. These interventions have significantly improved access to essential health and education services for people in the community.
Five years after its completion, the project continues to deliver tangible benefits. The centre now provides more reliable healthcare services, supported by uninterrupted power and improved vaccine storage. The expanded and renovated facility has also created a more conducive learning environment, with additional spaces for educational activities.
The centre has also evolved to meet emerging community needs. It now hosts a government-partnered nutrition programme serving mothers and children under the age of five, further strengthening its role as a hub for community health and development.
Through the GGP programme, Japan remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote human security and contribute to the well-being of communities across Nigeria.
