On 26 March 2026, Ambassador SUZUKI Hideo, attended the Commissioning & Hand-over Ceremony of the Pilot Plastic Waste Collection Centre in Jabi, FCT, under UNIDO Project “Promoting sustainable plastic value chains through circular economy practices”.

The Government of Japan contributed 2.157 million USD to the UNIDO-led project to promote a sustainable environment in Nigeria, and this collaboration integrates immediate action with long-term environmental stewardship, reflecting Japan's enduring partnership with Africa as reaffirmed at the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in Japan, in August last year.

Ambassador Suzuki hopes that the 3Rs (Reuse, Reduce, Recycle), which are widely practiced in Japan, will also take root here in Nigeria, and he looks forward to seeing the vehicles and recycling bags provided through this project being used to collect plastic bottles from schools and offices across Abuja.
