Japan Strengthens Lagos State's cholera response capacity

On 17 February 2026, Ambassador SUZUKI Hideo, attended the Project Completion and Achievement Dissemination Event for the Project "Emergency capacity building of the informal food and water vendors and waste workers in flood-affected Lagos to combat cholera outbreaks".
The Government of Japan contributed US$225,000 to UNIDO-led projects, strengthening Lagos State's emergency response capacity during the cholera outbreak by enhancing the capabilities of informal food and water vendors and waste workers through the provision of necessary training and essential supplies. This ceremony marks the completion of the project.

In his speech, Ambassador Suzuki referenced Japan's history of experiencing a major cholera epidemic 160 years ago and the immense damage it caused. He emphasized the importance of fundamental principles and tools for infectious disease control provided through this project, expressing his conviction that it must be entirely possible to bring cholera mortality to zero.
Japan remains steadfast in its commitment to Nigeria's resilient future.
