Japan Supports Strengthening Flood Resilience in Nigeria

On 28 January 2026, Ambassador SUZUKI Hideo attended the Arrangement Letter Signing Ceremony for the Japan Supplementary Budget Project titled "Strengthening Flood Resilience in Nigeria to Foster Long-Term Societal Stability – Focus on Niger State," held at the UN House in Abuja. The ceremony was attended by Dr. Hajo Sani, H.E Ambassador, Permanent Delegate of Nigeria to UNESCO, Dr. Aishetu Gogo Ndayako, Permanent Secretary of Ecological Project Office, Dr. Latif Olagunju, Secretary General of National Commission for UNESCO, and Dr Jean-Paul Ngome Abiaga, the Head of Office a.i, UNESCO Abuja Office. The project aims to respond to the urgent need to transition from reactive disaster response to proactive, climate-resilient development in Nigeria, implemented by the UNESCO Abuja Office with a contribution of approximately USD 53,000, funded by the Government of Japan.
In his remarks, the Ambassador highlighted that the project contributes to fostering South-South and triangular cooperation through UNESCO's networks and Japan's expertise in disaster risk management via the International Centre for Water Hazard and Risk Management (ICHARM).
