Japan Supports Unlocking Nigeria–Japan Trade and Investment under AfCFTA

On 28 January 2026, Mr. KOZAKI Hitoshi, Deputy Head of Mission, the Embassy of Japan in Nigeria, participated in “Nigeria–Japan Capacity Building and Investment Dialogue”, held in Lagos. The event is a part of the Japan-funded project “Unlocking Trade and Investment Opportunities in the Context of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA),” implemented by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with a contribution of approximately USD 1 million. The event aims to strengthen institutional capacity, enhance understanding of AfCFTA regulations, and promote sustainable business linkages between Japanese and Nigerian enterprises. The event brought together key stakeholders, including Mrs. Kaosarat Folashade Ambrose, Commissioner for Industries, Trade and Investment, Lagos State; Ms. Clare Henshaw, Head of the Inclusive Growth Unit/National Programmes Specialist, UNDP; Princess Zahrah Mustapha Audu, Director General, Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC); Mr. Takashi Oku, Managing Director of the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO); and Dr. Veronica Safiya Ndanusa, Executive Director of the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex Management Board and MDs of Japanese companies. Discussions focused on strengthening trade facilitation, standards, and institutional readiness to maximise AfCFTA opportunities.

The Deputy Head of Mission highlighted AfCFTA as a transformative platform for Africa and a strategic opportunity for Nigeria’s economic development. The seminar underscored Japan’s continued support for inclusive growth and stronger Nigeria–Japan trade and investment relations.
