Embassy of Japan in Nigeria Joins UNESCO-IICBA and Nigerian Partners to Advance Teacher Training Reform

On 24 September 2025, Ambassador SUZUKI Hideo led the Embassy of Japan delegation to a high-level stakeholder engagement at Chelsea Hotel, Abuja, focused on collating research findings and integrating modern innovations into teacher training curricula across Nigeria and Africa. The event brought together UNESCO International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa (UNESCO- IICBA), the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), the Federal Ministry of Education, the Africa Federation of Teaching Regulatory Authorities (AFTRA), and other key actors committed to raising teaching standards.
 
In his goodwill message, the Ambassador reaffirmed Japan’s strong support for education reform on the continent, highlighting an ongoing project funded by the Government of Japan with approximately USD 3.26 million that provides technical assistance to strengthen teacher training institutions. He stressed Japan’s readiness to continue offering expertise and resources so that innovations directly empower teachers and ensure quality education reaches every child.
 
The meeting concluded with a shared resolve among Nigerian authorities, UNESCO, AFTRA, and development partners, including Japan, to accelerate curriculum review, harmonise innovations continent-wide, and translate today’s recommendations into concrete reforms that will produce better-equipped teachers and brighter futures for African children.
