Japan Supports Nigeria’s Efforts to Strengthen Plastic Waste Management

On 25 November 2025, Ambassador SUZUKI Hideo attended the seminar on the implementation guideline for Nigeria’s National Policy on Plastic Waste Management, held in Abuja. The seminar, organised under the Japan-funded project implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), brought together representatives from the Federal Ministry of Environment, UNIDO, and development partners to advance national initiatives on reducing plastic pollution.

In her welcome remarks, Madam Falmata Bukar-Kolo, Deputy Director, Pollution Control and Environmental Health, Federal Ministry of Environment, acknowledged Japan’s valuable support to Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen plastic waste collection, recycling, and environmentally responsible utilisation. She noted that the formal presentation of the new guideline marks a significant step towards improving plastic waste control across the country.

Ambassador Suzuki highlighted that Japan’s support to UNIDO through the grant project “Promoting Sustainable Plastic Value Chains through Circular Economy Practices” contributes to Nigeria’s efforts to enhance waste management systems and promote circular economy solutions. He commended the Federal Ministry of Environment and UNIDO for their collaboration in developing the new implementation guideline.

The seminar reaffirmed the strong partnership between Japan, Nigeria, and UNIDO in promoting sustainable plastic waste management and supporting national actions aimed at reducing plastic pollution and advancing a cleaner and healthier environment.
