Strengthening Japan–UNFPA Partnership for Sustainable Development in Nigeria

On 5 November 2025, Ambassador SUZUKI Hideo welcomed Ms. Muriel Mafico, Resident Representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Nigeria, and her team to the Embassy. The Ambassador congratulated Ms. Muriel on her appointment and commended UNFPA’s continuous efforts in promoting reproductive health, gender equality, and youth empowerment in Nigeria.

Ms. Muriel expressed appreciation for Japan’s strong partnership and generous contribution to UNFPA’s global operations. She emphasised that Japan’s humanitarian assistance and innovative approach, as showcased during TICAD 9, have greatly inspired UNFPA’s work in aligning humanitarian support with long-term development goals.

They discussed ongoing Japan-funded UNFPA projects, the importance of private sector engagement, and the potential of technology-driven solutions such as digital health platforms. Ambassador Suzuki reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to continued collaboration with UNFPA in addressing humanitarian and developmental challenges in Nigeria.
