Japan Supports Combating Cholera Outbreaks in Nigeria

2025/4/8

On 8 April 2025, Mr. KOZAKI Hitoshi, Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of Japan in Nigeria, attended the inauguration ceremony for the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) project “Emergency capacity building of the informal food and water vendors and waste workers in flood-affected Lagos to combat cholera outbreaks,” which the Government of Japan is funding with $225,000.

The ceremony was held in Lagos, joined by Mr. Tokunbo Philip Wahab, Honourable Commissioner, Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Dr. Osuji Otsu, UNIDO National Programme Officer, and Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, Lagos State Environment Protection Agency (LASEPA) General Manager.

This multisectoral project builds capacity for cholera and other infectious disease prevention among food and water vendors in the most affected communities. As key players in food safety and waste handling practices, these vendors and waste workers play a crucial role in preventing the spread of cholera.

Japan remains committed to strengthening health security in Africa and around the world.
