The Embassy of Japan in Nigeria is seeking a motivated Independent Contractor for Grant Assistance for the Grassroots and Human Security Project (GGP), who will be assigned to the Economic and Development Cooperation section and work with an Independent Contractor (a senior Japanese international contractor) for GGP. GGP was first introduced by the Government of Japan in 1989 in order to meet various socio-economic needs in developing countries. GGP helps NGOs, hospitals, primary schools, and local government bodies implement their development projects. For years, Japan has supported many GGP projects in Nigeria.
 
  • Duties
  1. Contact GGP applicants and implementation organisations, serving as a liaison between the applicant organisations and the Embassy of Japan,
  2. Manage and address challenges from past projects,
  3. Conduct preliminary field surveys, progress monitoring surveys and follow-up surveys.
  4. Prepare progress reports, completion reports and follow-up reports,
  5. Organise grant contract signing ceremonies,
  6. Assist in calling for, receiving, managing data of, and reviewing GGP applications.
  7. Facilitate project implementation,
  8. Monitor past and ongoing projects,
  9. Preparation of GGP documents related to GGP,
(10) Perform any other GGP-related duties as assigned.
 
  • Type of Contract:
    • Contract of Mandate (Please note that an Independent Contractor is NOT an employee of the Embassy of Japan in Nigeria.)
      • Working Hours: 8:00-17:30 (Monday to Thursday) / 8:00-12:45 (Friday)
      • Holiday: Saturday, Sunday and Embassy’s closure days
 
  • Location
    • Embassy of Japan in Nigeria (No.9, Bobo Street (Off Gana Street), Maitama, Abuja, FCT, Nigeria)
    • Preliminary field surveys, monitoring surveys, and follow-up surveys may be overnight (one night) trips.
 
  • Contract Period: February 2025 – March 2025 (renewable)
    • The probation period is from the date of signing the initial contract to 31 March 2025.
    • If the independent contractor requests for renewal of contract and the Embassy approves it, the contract may be renewed on 1 April in 2025, 2026 and 2027. Since the independent contractor cannot be contracted for longer than 36 consecutive months, if the contract extends beyond 31 March 2027, the end of the final contract cannot be set on the date that is beyond 36 months from the starting date of the initial contract. 
 
  • Requirement:
    • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree,
    • A minimum of two years of professional working experience,
    • Fluency in English (understanding/fluency of Japanese language is preferable but not mandatory),
    • Excellent skills in project management (communication, coordination and administration),
    • Excellent skills in using Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook),
    • Excellent knowledge and interest in politics, economy, society, culture and geography in Nigeria,
    • Knowledge and experience in the field of development cooperation, preferable.
 
  • Compensation
    • Compensation is roughly comparable to the net base salary of the UN Local Staff (Approximately G4 to G6/ Duty Station: Nigeria).
    • Please note that the specific amount of monthly compensation shall be determined on the basis of the applicant’s experience and qualifications.
    • There are no additional benefits such as allowance for transportation, housing, or health insurance. However, a part of transportation, accommodations, and allowance related to GGP tasks such as preliminary and follow-up surveys may be covered.
