  • We accept only cash. Please have the exact amount ready.
  • Visa fees will be required for pick up time only.
  • If the visa is not issued, no fees are required.
  • Certain countries are visa fee exemption. If your nationality is the nationality which subject to visa fee exemption, you will be informed at the time of passport collection.
  • If you receive your visa, please make sure that your name, date of birth, and passport number are correct before you leave the Embassy.

3 Validity of visa and stay

(1) Validity of visa
  • For a single entry visa, duration between date of issue and date of expiry is 3 months. It means that the validity of single entry visa is 3 months. Once you obtain visa, you are required to enter Japan within the duration (3 months).
  • If you wish to postpone your travel (departure) for longer than 3 months, you will be required to make another visa application.
(2) Validity of stay
  • Your validity of stay will be counted from the following day that you arrive in Japan. (ex. arrival on 1 Jan and departure on 16 Jan counted as 15 days (NOT 16 days)).

Visa Application Procedure

1 Documents Preparation

  • Do not send any visa document to the Embassy by post, email or fax.
  • Please do not use stapler for any documentation.
  • Required document should be valid at the time of visa application, and should be submitted within three months of their date of issue.
  • If there are two or more visa applicants and they are family members, documents to prove relationship between visa applicants (e.g. marriage certificate, birth certificate) are required. (Both original and photocopies are required.)
  • Documents submitted for application will not be returned except for passport and the document which cannot be re-issued (e.g. Letter of Employment, Marriage Certificate, Birth certificate). When you submit any document which cannot be re-issued, please attach photocopy of the document together with the original document.

(2)Photo requirement
Dimensions of the photo must be identical to the following requirements:
  • 45mm long × 35mm wide 
  • From the top of your head to your jaw must be 27±2mm 
  • Top margin (from the head to the edge of photo) must be between 7±2mm 
Other notes about photo requirement:
  • No frame 
  • White background without anything in the back 
  • No hat or no head covering unless for religious purposes 
  • No shadows on the face or background 
  • Taken not more than six months before the application date 
  • You must look squarely at the camera 
  • Please write your name on the back of a picture

This has to be prepared by inviting person / organization in Japan. Letter prepared by applicant is not accepted.
 
Required only when guarantor in Japan will pay for the visa applicant's travel expenses.
 
This has to be prepared by inviting person, and required only when there are two or more visa applicants.
 
Only for unregistered corporations in Japan. A registered corporation/organization is required to provide certified copy of incorporation register.

(4)Flight reservation
  • The intended date of departure from Nigeria on your flight reservation slip will be required to be at least in 10 working days from the date of visa application.
  • Paid airline ticket is not required for visa application and we do not recommend purchasing airline tickets until visas are issued.

2  Appointment Booking

  • Applicants are required to contact us to request for appointment latest by 15 working days before the intended date of departure.
  • Applicants are required to submit visa application at the Embassy at least 10 working days before the intended date of departure from Nigeria.
  • If your intended date of departure from Nigeria is less than 10 working days, we do not accept your visa application. In this case, please reschedule your travel date to Japan.
  • Applications cannot be accepted more than 3 months before the intended date of departure from Nigeria, but can be accepted from approximately 2 months before the intended date of departure from Nigeria.
  • Visa application is by appointment only while pickup is not.
  • Please be noted that visa application is not online application.
  • All visa applications must be submitted in person by the applicant at the Embassy of Japan in Abuja.
  • Appointment scheduling is done via email only.
 
Please send an email (English only) with the 6 information listed below to visanigeria@la.mofa.go.jp by visa applicant himself/herself, except when the applicant is a minor. For a minor visa applicant, a proxy person (including parents) can send email to us. Please write the information listed below in the body of the email, NOT in the subject of the email.
 
Visa applicant's name
When a proxy person send email to us for appointment booking for a minor visa applicant, the name of the proxy person and relationship to the visa applicant should be provided. (Please be noted that all visa application must be submitted in person by the applicant in the Embassy of Japan in Abuja.)
 
Purpose of your visit to Japan (Choose one from A-E)
A - short-term business etc (When you choose A, the name of the inviting organization and the name of the conference or event etc. should be provided. When you are attending a conference or event, date of the conference or event should be provided.)
B - visiting relatives
C - visiting acquaintances/friend

E - visa application with a certificate of eligibility (When you choose E, your date of birth, "Status" stating on your certificate of eligibility and date of issuance should be provided.)

Please do not send any attachment file when not requested. 
We respond to email concerning visa application within 5 working days.
Please do not send the same email multiple times.
Please note that your appointment has not yet been fixed until you receive an email for confirmation from us.
If you wish to reschedule or cancel your appointment, please contact us via email no later than 24 hours prior to your appointment. If you don't show up on or before your appointment time without prior notification to us in the above time frame, your appointment will be automatically cancelled, and you will be required to contact us via email for fresh appointment.

3  Submit documents

Please be at the Embassy before the appointment time, with all the requirement for visa application.
If you’re late for the appointment without prior notice to the Embassy, you will be required to contact us via email for fresh appointment.
Embassy will not accept visa application which is insufficient or incomplete.
Submission of requirements does not guarantee issuance of visa. A Japanese visa will be issued to an applicant when he/she meets Criteria of visa issuance.
Examination will be initially processed by the submitted documents. However, the applicant may be required to submit additional documents if needed.
When you email documents requested by the Embassy, please make sure to write visa applicant's name in all email correspondence.
If you do not submit the additional documents, the examination cannot be processed any further.
 

4  Application Examination

Visa will be issued to an applicant when he/she meets all of the following requirements and if the issuance is considered to be appropriate.
 
  • The applicant possesses a valid passport and is entitled to the re-entry to a country of his/her nationality or a country of his/her residence.
  • All submitted documents are authentic, completed and satisfactory.
  • The activities to be engaged in Japan/ the civil status or the position of the applicant/ the period of stay meet the requirements for the status of residence and the period of stay stipulated in the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act. (Cabinet Order No.319 of 1951. Hereinafter referred to as the "Immigration Control Act")
  • The applicant do not fall under any of the items of Article 5, Paragraph 1 of the Immigration Control Act.    
 
  • The visa processing time is a minimum of 5 working days (excluding Japanese holidays) from the next day of the day when all submitted documents are verified to be in order (please note that it is not 5 days from the date the documents are received at the counter).
  • It may take longer than usual if a large number of visa applications converge at a short-time period.
  • If any kind of checking is required (the submission of additional documents, an interview with the applicant, inquiries, etc.), the examination may take longer than five working days (from several weeks to several months). 
  • Examination will be initially processed by the submitted documents, however, the applicant may be required to submit additional documents if needed. If you do not submit the additional documents, the examination cannot be processed any further.
  • Submission of requirements does not guarantee the issuance of visa.
  • The decision will be notified to the visa applicant by the embassy at the time of passport collection.
 

5  Passport Collection

All visa applicant who submitted visa applications will receive email from the Embassy for collection of passport. The email will be sent to the email address used for booking an appointment for visa application. When you received an email for passport collection from the Embassy, visa applicant or his/her proxy person is required to come to the Embassy for passport collection with the requirements listed below.
 
  • Visa application receipt
  • Valid photo ID (Both original and photocopy)
             - e.g: driver’s license, NIN slip etc. Government approved ID only. Company ID is not accepted
             - In case you wish to use your passport submitted to the Embassy as your valid photo ID, only photocopy of your passport is acceptable.
  • Printout of email notification for passport collection
  • Visa fee is required when a visa is issued only
 
  • Letter of authorization signed by visa applicant
  • Visa application receipt
  • The proxy person's valid photo ID (Both original and photocopy)
             - e.g: passport, driver’s license, NIN slip etc. Government approved ID only.
             Organization's ID is not accepted.
  • Printout of email notification for passport collection
  • Visa fee is required when a visa is issued only

2  Third country visa application       

If you are a foreign national residing in Nigeria (Third country visa application), valid CERPAC card or valid residence permit will be required at the time of visa application.

3  For travelers who are staying at the departure area of the airport in Japan

For travelers who are staying at the departure area of the airport in Japan until their next flight, no visa is required regardless of nationality. If you are unsure with your flight, please contact airline company in advance.
